Staff Mechanical Engineer (PE)

Position Summary:

Works under the general supervision of Senior level engineers and Principals to manage and perform responsible engineering work. An employee in this class performs a variety of advanced engineering tasks including production of construction plans and specifications, project management from start to end (or as previous experience dictates), construction administration, and possible management of others.  Responsibilities to increase in scope and difficulty as knowledge and experience are gained. Work is managed and reviewed by Senior level engineers and Principals.

Responsibilities:

  • Work under the general supervision of a Senior and Principal Engineers to fully manage projects, including client contact, project estimating, contract preparation, budgeting, and billing.
  • The goal of this position is advancement to Senior Level engineer, and eventual ownership track.
  • Perform calculations including HVAC load calculations.  Design HVAC and plumbing systems including ductwork layout and sizing, hydronic system layout and sizing, equipment sizing, plumbing calculations and layout.
  • Apply knowledge of applicable building codes (International Code Series) and ASHRAE standards such as ASHRAE 90.1 and ASHRAE 62 to mechanical and plumbing designs.
  • Perform ASHRAE 90.1 compliance checks (ComCheck).
  • Perform ASHRAE 62 ventilation calculations for simple to complex system types.
  • Energy modeling to include basic modeling for system type comparison, gas versus electric comparisons, impacts of envelope and lighting design decisions, and life cycle cost analyses.
  • LEED related calculations, documentation, and filling out templates for submission to USGBC/GBCI for project certification.
  • Coordinate with other outside consultants including civil, structural, electrical and architectural disciplines.
  • Meet with clients, contractors, agencies, consultants, and others.
  • Limited marketing, including preparation of proposals and contracts.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor Designers and Junior Engineers.
  • Perform job-site visits for verification of existing conditions, and “plan-in-hand” quality control
  • Construction administration to include inspections, preparation of punchlists and observation reports, submittal review, RFI response, and resolution of construction conflicts and issues that may arise.
  • Acquire experience, skills, and education as necessary to become a Senior Engineer.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a PE licensure is required. 
  • Desired years of experience: 4-9 years.
  • Generally, proficiency in the use of Windows-based operating systems, Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel, AutoCAD, and mechanical software as appropriate. HHB uses Trane Trace load calculation and energy modeling software, as well as eQuest. Proficiency in these programs is desirable.
  • Ability to perform energy modeling per ASHRAE 90.1 for LEED AP credential desirable.
  • Successful Revit MEP project implementation and proficiency is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to make complex computations and to check plans, drawings, calculations, details, and technical specifications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Desire to continually learn and advance is essential.
  • Some local and/or out of town travel is required. Possession of a valid Driver’s license is required.

This position is full-time.

Mechanical Designer/Engineering Graduate, Entry Level

Position Summary:

Mechanical designer for a mechanical engineering consulting firm in the building construction industry. This position performs mechanical design for HVAC systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems and energy modeling in both new buildings and renovations.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a detail-oriented entry level mechanical engineering graduate to join our firm. A good candidate is a self-starter and is eager to learn.  By working for a small professional engineering firm, this employee will be working directly with Principal level engineers – trained by industry veterans and equipped with tools for a successful career.  This employee will travel to job sites and attend project meetings with Principal engineers, not just sit behind a desk all day.  The candidate should have the ability to meet deadlines and communicate well with coworkers and supervisors.  Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • 0-4 years experience in the HVAC/Mechanical design industry
  • Perform load calculations using Trane Trace
  • Energy modeling in Trane Trace and or eQuest
  • Duct system design
  • Outside air (ventilation) calculations using ASHRAE 62 requirements
  • Size, select, and specify HVAC equipment
  • Mechanical and plumbing piping system design
  • LEED related calculations and LEED online assistance
  • Coordinate design with other consultants such as the architect and other engineers, contractors and owners
  • Assist in the production of bid/construction drawings on schedule
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Field investigations during design phase to verify existing conditions of an existing building
  • Field observations of projects under construction for compliance with the design
  • Upon passage of the PE exam, candidate will advance to Staff Engineer, with possibility for future advancement.

Qualifications:

  • Mechanical Engineering Bachelors of Science Degree from an ABET accredited university
  • Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE, or EIT) exam is preferred.
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Excels when working in a project team environment
  • Willing to travel to project sites including sites under construction
  • Current working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit is a plus
  • Current working knowledge of Trane Trace is a plus
  • LEED AP credential is a plus, if not, candidate will be required to obtain LEED AP credential during the first year of employment
  • Some local and/or out of town travel is required. Possession of a valid Driver’s license is required.

Mechanical CAD Operator / Drafter

Position Summary:

HHB Engineers, P.C. is looking for a full-time qualified Mechanical CAD Operator / Drafter who works under specific supervision to perform specialized computer aided drafting (CAD) of mechanical plans including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and DDC Controls. An employee in this class performs a variety of CAD operations, increasing in scope and difficulty as knowledge and experience are gained. Work is managed and reviewed by the Drafting Manager, Senior Designers, Engineers, and Principals.  This position is an in-person position at our office in Prattville, Alabama. HHB Engineers utilizes a combination of Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP for production of mechanical designs for new building construction and renovations.

Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree for 2-year educational program in related course work.
  • Applicants with all experience levels with AutoCAD encouraged to apply from recent graduate to experienced CAD operator.
  • 1 year experience using Revit preferred but not required.  Must be willing to learn and use Revit.
  • Previous drafting experience for a Mechanical consulting firm or Mechanical contractor in the building construction industry preferred.

Job Duties:

  • Follow guidelines in the HHB Drafting Manual on company CAD standards.
  • Set-up projects in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Use Project Navigator in AutoCAD for sheet management (using elements, constructions, views, and sheets).
  • Draft Red-line mark-ups in AutoCAD and Revit under the direct supervision of others.
  • Plotting/production and distribution of plans for review by Engineering Staff.
  • Acquire experience, skills, and education as necessary to advance in CAD skills and design through online learning and instructor-led short courses.
  • Possible field work performing and assisting with verification of existing conditions in commercial buildings, local travel only.

Candidates must be able to work in a deadline driven environment.  Candidate must demonstrate ability to maintain a high level of quality control of their work, and communicate effectively with others for workflow management.   Based upon performance and skill level, the employee will be given opportunities to advance and gain more responsibilities within the firm.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week.  HHB hours of operations are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm.  If Overtime is required due to project deadlines, overtime is paid at time and a half normal hourly rate.  However, HHB values work-life balance of all staff, and strives to minimize overtime for all staff by managing workflow of employees and client deadlines.

Candidate must be able to pass randomized drug tests and background checks.
