Why Us?

HHB Engineers, P.C. has evolved since forming in 1983, starting as Hattemer Hornsby & Associates, to HHB Engineers, P,C, and a Women-Owned Small Business.

HHB specializes in the design and analysis of mechanical systems for new and existing buildings, and is located in Prattville, Alabama, part of the great Montgomery metro area.  Our In-House expertise includes project management on multidisciplinary AE projects as both Prime AE and Consultant, design of mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, controls & building automation, and fire protection systems, as well as energy modeling and LEED certified designs.  HHB Engineers’ Principals are involved in the project from start to finish, including site visits and construction administration to ensure project goals and milestones are achieved.  We employ three licensed professional engineers, LEED professionals, and certified Commissioning Agents.  Our PEs are registered throughout the Southeastern United States.  Drafting and design tools include AutoCAD Revit for Building Information Modeling (BIM) as well as AutoCAD MEP, both through the current version.  Even when using AutoCAD MEP, our designs are modeled in 3D, a standard at HHB Engineers.

The firm has experience with all phases of a project including project planning, programming, project management, design, analysis, and construction supervision including fast track design-build projects.

HHB works on a wide variety of project types, including an extensive amount of renovation work throughout Alabama and the Southeastern United States:

  • Extensive Renovation experience
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Historic Renovations
  • Military Bases
  • Corps of Engineers
  • Federal Buildings and Courthouses
  • Laboratories
  • Hospitals and Operating Rooms
  • Central Utility Plans
  • Athletic Facilities
  • Detention Facilities
  • LEED / Sustainable Design

As Prime A/E, HHB has been the Team Leader for numerous direct multi-discipline type contracts and tasked with the coordination of overall design services on major construction projects (up to $80 Mil) for various government agencies including the Corps of Engineers and GSA, military bases, schools and universities, hospitals, laboratories, religious and recreational facilities, sustainable design, and LEED certified projects.

For LEED Projects, HHB Engineers self performs all energy modeling required for LEED certification, LEED calculations for the mechanical and plumbing design, provides required documentation for certification, and completes mechanical related templates in LEED Online.

HHB Engineers is a corporate member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Expertise

HVAC:

Responsible HVAC system designs begin with a comprehension of the current ICC Codes, NFPA, & ASHRAE Standards as well as sustainable design practices. System selection should be based on the specific project requirements and life cycle costs. Coupled with our understanding of the building structural and Architectural constraints, Engineering decisions are made that provide the system that maximizes value to the owner.  Specific experience/specialties include:

  • Air Handling System Replacements and Upgrades
  • Humid Area and Coastal Design
  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Analysis and upgrades
  • Desiccant dehumidification systems
  • Analysis of problem air distribution systems
  • Design and Upgrades to Variable Air Volume Systems
  • Dedicated Outside Air Pre-Conditioning System
  • Exhaust Systems including heat recovery
  • Fume Hood and welding exhaust systems
  • Chilled Water and Hot Water Hydraulics
  • Central Chilled Water and Hot Water Systems including campus Central Plants
  • Variable-primary chilled and hot water systems
  • Steam Boilers and Steam distribution systems
  • Steam humidification
  • Smoke Evacuation and Control
  • Water-Source heat pump systems
  • Geothermal Systems, Ground source and Lake loop systems
  • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF or VRV) Systems
  • Industrial mechanical systems for process cooling and ventilation

Plumbing:

Plumbing system designs begin with knowledge of the current ICC Codes, material and product options and sustainable design practices. Although often viewed as simple and requiring little thought, modern plumbing system can be complex and incorporate rain-water or grey water harvesting, high efficiency water heating, and low water demand fixtures. Our knowledge and experience with these factors will provide the optimal systems for each project. Specific experience/specialties include:

  • Solar hot water systems
  • Acid Waste & Vent designs
  • Domestic Hot, Cold and Re-circulation Systems
  • De-ionized and specialty Water systems
  • Non-potable Water Systems including
  • Rainwater Harvesting (catchment) systems
  • HVAC Condensate collection
  • Non-potable water systems for flushing, cooling tower make-up, irrigation
  • Anesthesia Vacuum Systems
  • Campus Natural gas distribution
  • Fuel storage and piping systems
  • Medical Air, Vacuum and Oxygen
  • Bulk Oxygen Facilities
  • Specialized gases such as nitrogen, nitrous oxide, hydrogen helium, argon, acetylene and mixed gases
  • Sustainable Design for LEED

Fire Protection:

Adequate understanding of fire protection requirements on a project requires more than a typical HVAC or Plumbing Engineer can provide.  HHB has on staff a Professional Engineer who is also registered with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. Specific experience/specialties include:

  • Standpipe Systems
  • Fire Pumps
  • Sprinkler Systems (wet, dry and pre-action)
  • Clean Agent fire suppression systems

Commissioning:

HHB Engineers 30+ years of diverse project design and construction administration experience provides a strong foundation and thorough understanding of building systems to our Commissioning Process. HHB Engineers’ Cx Agents
are Certified Commissioning Authorities with the AABC Commissioning Group.

HHB Commissioning Experience/clients includes:

  • Military and Corps of Engineers
  • LEED Projects (Basic and Enhanced Commissioning)
  • Mechanical Systems
  • Plumbing Systems (including medical gas and vacuum, solar hot water)
  • Fire Alarm Systems

Sustainable Design / LEED Design:

Understanding the goals and requirements for USGBC LEED certifications requires more than passing the USGBC tests, it demands Engineers:

  • experienced with designing to LEED standards
  • experienced in submitting to USGBC and understanding of the documentation required
  • experienced in obtaining final USGBC certification

HHB has on staff a Professional Mechanical Engineer who has successfully navigated this path to certification (a LEED AP BD+C) and a LEED Green Associate.

BIM Modeling/ Revit MEP

HHB has experience in several Revit projects from small 1,000 SF projects to the 178,000 SF Vance Federal Building renovation project, in versions from Revit 2009 to present (via Autodesk subscription service). HHB’s Revit models have been passed along to Contractors for use in generating shop drawings, and in clash detection services.  HHB Engineers has participated in clash detection meetings with the Contractor and Sub-Contractors to aid in resolution of any issues prior to construction.  This is particularly helpful in renovation projects where the exact structure may be unknown.

Example Revit Projects:

  • Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, University of Alabama
  • STOVL Tower, Eglin AFB
  • Vance Federal Building and Courthouse, Birmingham, AL
  • ADAL Distributed Ground Facility, Birmingham Air National Guard
  • Morgan County Health Department
  • Bullock County Health Department
  • Little Hall Heating Plant Tie-in, University of Alabama
  • Newnan Fire Station, Newnan, GA
  • Historic Pike Road School, Montgomery, AL
  • Mal Moore Athletic Building, Dining Facility Addition, University of Alabama

Testimonial: For the Vance Federal Building Project, the mechanical model was passed along to the Mechanical contractor as part of their requirement for clash detection. “…we wanted to let the team know how much it helped to have a competent set of BIM design drawings from HHB Engineers.  The BIM design drawings were extremely helpful in completing the BIM process with the whole team. We are very appreciative of work of HHB and their help through the BIM process.” – Jody Martin, RJ Mechanical
