Completed in 2010, HHB served as prime A/E on the production of bridging documents for the design of the new East Quad Energy Plant for the University of Alabama, and as UA’s representative throughout Construction, managing all aspects of the project. The Energy Plant is located on Hackberry Lane north of University Blvd. Total plant capacity is 9,600 tons of cooling. Four 1,200 ton chillers were installed in the first phase, with four more 1,200 chillers installed in subsequent phases. Three 600 hp steam boilers were installed initially with two more boilers installed in subsequent phases (HHB serving as Prime AE on both of the boiler addition projects). Cooling towers are located on the roof of the building. Underground distribution piping was installed in the initial project under Hackberry, connecting to the Shelby Hall plant to the north, and eventually extended south and West to Bryant Denny Stadium, connecting other various buildings across campus.
